Indian-origin rapper-singer Karan Aujla is upping the game in a big way, with his latest album, P-Pop Culture, which fuses fiery Punjabi hip-hop with the glitter and swing of modern pop, now out.

One of the biggest exports of Punjabi music in recent years, Aujla has savoured the fruits of fame—and is familiar with both its peaks and perils. The singer has, in the past, spoken about his house in Canada being attacked, and the very real security threats faced by Punjabi artists worldwide.

In an exclusive conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India on the eve of the album drop, Aujla opened up on the threats to his life, reflecting on the inescapability of moving with a large security detail.

"A lot of people walk with security and bouncers for the flash," Aujla said. "That's not true in my case. It's for the safety aspect. I have actually been through stuff. I have been targeted. I have seen bullets go through my windows. It's not about making a show of carrying a weapon."

In 2023, Aujla moved with his family from Vancouver, Canada to Dubai, UAE, where he currently resides. He flies to India frequently for work, wishing he could return for good to his 'own village' in Ludhiana, Punjab. "The situation right now is not what I would like it to be. But hopefully in the future I'd be able to," he said.

Aujla spoke about the atmosphere of fear and risk that has only deepened in the music world, following high-profile attacks on Punjabi artists and rappers.

"We don't wanna take any chances," he emphasised. "There's so much stuff that's happened in the past. People have died for real. So it's not a joke. I'm trying not to let any of that disturb my happy life. I would rather take precautions."
