Kapil Sharma is back with the second season of The Great Indian Kapil Show, streaming on Netflix, promising easy fun with a star-studded guest list.
Comedian and actor Kapil Sharma’s popular talk show, The Great Indian Kapil Show, has returned for a second season on Netflix. According to Netflix’s What We Watched the First Half of 2024 report, the maiden season garnered 4.6 million views, and managed to find a place in the top 10 per cent of Netflix’s series titles.
The first episode of the new second season saw celebrity guests Alia Bhatt, Karan Johar, Vasan Bala and Vedang Raina promoting their upcoming film Jigra. Here are The Hollywood Reporter India’s favourite standout moments from the episode.
Kapil Sharma’s Stand-Up Shenanigans
Kicking off the episode with his signature stand-up routine, Sharma made his first set about the diversity and dichotomy of India — filled with praise and satire. This season brings some snazzy post-production magic. The addition of VFX has elevated Sharma’s stand-up routine, including a hilarious moment, where two versions of Sharma engage in a witty back-and-forth. The show is constantly evolving while staying true to its roots.
Karan Johar’s Bond with Alia Bhatt
Johar candidly shared an anecdote about Bhatt, whom he considers his "first daughter." When Bhatt was auditioning for Student of the Year (2012), she was put on a restrictive diet before a look test. Johar had brought her a cupcake to celebrate her casting — and the first thing Bhatt asked when he broke the news was, “Can I eat this?” The anecdote brought a smile to everyone’s face.
Parenting Adventures
The conversation turned to the delightful chaos of parenthood, with Bhatt sharing that her husband, Ranbir Kapoor, invents whimsical games for their daughter, Raha. Johar quickly chimed in, noting that while he’s a skilled storyteller in his professional life, he too makes up silly, nonsensical tales for his children. Bhatt added that her daughter only falls asleep to a lullaby in Malayalam, ‘Unni Vava Vo,’ thanks to her nurse, and both she and Kapoor have learned it to sing to Raha. The contradiction of picturing the star of the most gruesome film last year, Animal (2023), singing a lullaby in a language he doesn’t understand for the sake of his daughter paints such a tender image of him that it captured the Internet’s heart.
Playful Banter and Celebrity Trolling
As Bala and Raina joined the fun, the lighthearted banter took centre stage. Raina found himself in a playful crossfire as Sharma and Johar ganged up on the young actor, teasing him about his connection with Khushi Kapoor.
More laughs are expected in the upcoming episodes — with the stars of Devara: Part 1 in the next one.
