At the 79th Cannes Film festival, actress Tara Sutaria answers a set of questions about dealing with the challenges and lows of the film industry, and her responses seem to debunk common perceptions of the fame and glamour that come with being in the spotlight.

It is no news that trolling and skewed narratives are an alarmingly common byproduct in the film industry, and Sutaria, in her decade of being part of it, has faced her fair share of it. When asked how she deals with the noise, the first piece of advice she shares with us is something she learned from her mother growing up. “When you’re 30, something just switches in you. You just become this no-nonsense person, no matter who you’ve been before,” she says, this not being the first mention of her family during the interview and its role in shaping both her sense of self and staying grounded in an uncertain industry.

“I am trying to do the right thing, be the best version of myself that I can be. And if someone wants to come in and tarnish that, they can try, but the truth always wins,” she says. Sutaria also comments on what it is like hailing from a non-film family. “I have received over the last 9 years or 10 years that I have been in this business, so much organic love,” shedding light on a reality that many might deem difficult to find.

“I still am in a lot of ways, extremely sensitive,” she admits, but claims that what helps her persevere is not letting herself get affected by the negative PR and fake news. Her ability to do this is also something she loves about herself. “And I really say this with utmost honesty, if there was truth to something, it would bother me. It would definitely bother me. I wouldn’t be able to sleep at night. But I’m sleeping very well at night,” she says, with a sense of satisfaction and security.
