No shows before 9am, capped ticket pricing, and sweeping screen exclusivity; Aamir Khan’s upcoming film 'Sitaare Zameen Par' adopts an atypical release model.
Aamir Khan’s much-anticipated film Sitaare Zameen Par, set to release in two days, is taking a markedly unconventional route in its distribution strategy that breaks Bollywood’s recent norms. The move, insiders suggest, is designed to make the film more widely accessible while ensuring a dominant screen presence across India.
According to exhibition sources, the film’s distributors have circulated strict release guidelines to cinemas now that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has cleared the film. Most notably, theatres have been asked not to schedule any screenings before 9am. Additionally, despite its scale and star power, the film will forgo the “blockbuster pricing” typically associated with marquee titles.
“Instead of premium rates, the team has opted for popular weekend pricing,” a source told Bollywood Hungama, which first reported the news. “It’s slightly higher than regular rates but significantly more affordable than what most tentpole films charge. This seems to be a conscious decision by Aamir Khan, likely to ensure the film remains accessible to middle-income audiences.” This comes at a time when many moviegoers have cited high ticket prices as the primary reason for skipping theatrical experiences and watching movies at home instead.
The release strategy also mandates strict show allocations. Single-screen theatres must dedicate their entire schedule to Sitaare Zameen Par, foregoing all other titles. Multiplexes face a tiered requirement based on screen count, ranging from 8 shows per day in two-screen venues to a staggering 31 shows daily in cinemas with ten or more screens.
Advance booking for the film opened shortly after it received CBFC clearance yesterday. A wide release is on the cards, with a final screen count expected by June 19.
With this calibrated release model, Khan appears to be making both a commercial and philosophical statement, reaffirming his long-standing belief that cinema should be both widely visible and universally affordable.
Backed by Aamir Khan Productions, the film features 10 debutants, including Aroush Datta, Gopi Krishna Varma, Samvit Desai, Vedant Sharma, Ayush Bhansali, Ashish Pendse, Rishi Shahani, Rishabh Jain, Naman Mishra, and Simran Mangeshkar.
Sitaare Zameen Par is directed by RS Prasanna, who previously helmed the 2017 hit Shubh Mangal Saavdhan. Divy Nidhi Sharma has penned the screenplay, while Amitabh Bhattacharya is credited with lyrics. The film's music has been composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy.
Sitaare Zameen Par is the second release for Khan post-pandemic after his 2022 drama Laal Singh Chadha. The superstar would hope to score big with his latest, as his last hit was Dangal in 2015. His 2018 action-adventure drama Thugs of Hindostan had also bombed at the box office.
