Actor Vicky Kaushal is looking at the first blockbuster of his career with his latest theatrical outing Chhaava. Based on the life of Maratha king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the film has re-written box office records with a historic opening weekend of ₹121 crores.

Directed by Laxman Utekar, who had previously helmed mid-sized outings like Luka Chuppi (2019) and Mimi (2021), Chhaava is produced by Dinesh Vijan under Maddock Films.

The film had an opening of ₹33 crores on Friday, followed by a jump on Saturday when it recorded ₹39 crores. On Sunday, the film went on an overdrive as it netted a whopping ₹49 crores, taking the grand three-day total to ₹121 crores.

To put the numbers in context, Chhaava broke all opening and weekend records of previously-released Bollywood historical dramas.

Ajay Devgn-led Tanhaji – The Unsung Warrior (2020), which was the last big-budget Bollywood outing about the Maratha warrior Tanaji Malusare, had an opening weekend of ₹61 crores.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmaavat (2018) had an opening day of ₹24 crores, followed by a ₹114 crores weekend. Meanwhile, the filmmaker's Bajirao Mastani (2015), in a clash with Shah Rukh Khan's Dilwale, had netted ₹46 crores in three days.

Maharashtra has been the best-performing state for Chhaava. The film is likely to get a boost in collections on Wednesday owing to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti holiday.

The film will then head into the second weekend, aiming to cross ₹200 crores before that. Chhaava will be the first blockbuster of 2025 for Bollywood and will enjoy a clear run, as the next big Hindi film will arrive at the end of March with Salman Khan's Sikandar.

Chhaava also stars Rashmika Mandanna and Akshaye Khanna, who plays Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.
