On Monday, a group of several powerful film bodies representing Malayalam cinema and its workers came together for an Onam event organised by the Kerala Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC). At the event, representatives of the bodies stressed the need for unity and a more amicable solution to disputes between them.

According to a report in The Hindu, the group included the participation of members from Kerala Film Producers’ Association, Film Employees’ Federation of Kerala (FEFKA), Kerala Film Distributors’ Association, Film Exhibitors’ United Organisation of Kerala (FEUOK), Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (A.M.M.A), Malayalam Cine Technicians’ Association, and Kerala Cine Exhibitors’ Association.

At the meet, actor Dileep is said to have urged members not to speak directly to the media during times of dispute. He said it would be more ideal if disputes were ironed out between members before it reaches the public. A representative from FEUOK also urged members to raise issues faced by the industry before the State government.

The timing of the meet is significant as it comes three weeks after major changes in the top leadership among film bodies. In mid August, members of Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes got together to vote in Shwetha Menon in a historic move, making her the first president of the actors’ association.

This move is also seen as an image makeover after the fallout of the Hema Committee report late last year.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter India about the election and the pressures of the job, Menon had said, “I don’t want the entire burden of everything that’s happened so far to fall on me, and I definitely don’t want people expecting miracles. If I can survive the next three years without any major glitches, I’ll consider that half the job done. I’m not here to rewrite history; that’s not my agenda. There will always be people trying to pull you down, and honestly, there’s not much you can do about that.”

At the recent meet, she called for fixed working hours for women in the industry.
