Members of the Christian community protested against 'Jaat', alleging that it contains scenes that disrespect Jesus Christ.
Actor Sunny Deol-led actioner Jaat is in trouble. The Jalandhar police on Thursday registered an FIR against Deol, actors Randeep Hooda and Vineet Kumar Singh, along with Jaat director Gopichand Malineni and producer Naveen Malineni for allegedly hurting religious sentiments.
The development follows recent protests by members of the Christian community, who objected to the film's alleged disrespect towards Jesus Christ and Christian religious practices.
The FIR was filed under Section 299 (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The FIR was registered after the police reviewed the complaint for two days.
The makers on Friday said in a statement that they have "deleted" the scene and apologised for hurting religious sentiments. The controversial scene depicted Hooda standing inside a church during a prayer session, claiming to be sent by Jesus Christ, before opening fire.
"There has been a backlash for a specific scene in the film. The scene has been removed from the film with immediate effect. Our intention was not to hurt any religious sentiments. We deeply regret it and have taken a quick action of deleting the scene from the film. We sincerely apologize to everyone whose beliefs have been hurt," the statement read.
The Indian Express reported that the community members filed a complaint with the Jalandhar Commissionerate Police. They objected to a scene in the film where Hooda poses in a church in a manner reminiscent of Jesus Christ, claiming disrespect for religious sentiments.
Members of the community said such scenes and dialogues in Jaat may incite those who oppose Christianity to target churches, reported the publication.
Jaat has been a decent success at the box office since its April 10 release. The makers recently announced the sequel to the film, which will also be headlined by Deol.
