Veteran actor-filmmaker Manoj Kumar, fondly known as 'Bharat Kumar' for directing and starring in patriotic films, passed away on Friday following a prolonged illness. He was 87.
The actor breathed his last at around 3:30 AM at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, where he was admitted for the last two weeks. According to the family, he was suffering from several health-related complications due to his old age and passed away peacefully.
The screen icon was known for his patriotic dramas and earned the title of 'Bharat Kumar' after headlining films like Shaheed (1965), Upkar (1967), Purab Aur Paschim (1970), Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974), apart from featuring in other classics like Woh Kaun Thi (1964), Himalay Ki God Mein (1965), Patthar Ke Sanam (1967), and Kranti (1981).
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X and wrote how the legend would be remembered for his "patriotic zeal".
"Deeply saddened by the passing of legendary actor and filmmaker Shri Manoj Kumar Ji. He was an icon of Indian cinema, who was particularly remembered for his patriotic zeal, which was also reflected in his films. Manoj Ji's works ignited a spirit of national pride and will continue to inspire generations. My thoughts are with his family and admirers in this hour of grief. Om Shanti," the PM tweeted.
In a statement, superstar Aamir Khan offered his condolences and said, "Manoj Kumar was not just an actor, and film-maker, he was an institution. I have learnt so much watching his films. His films were often based on important social themes which brought him really close to the common man. My heartfelt condolences to his family."
Actor Akshay Kumar, who followed the veteran's footsteps by headlining several patriotic dramas in his career, paid his tribute on X and wrote, "I grew up learning from him that there’s no emotion like love and pride for our country. And if we actors won’t take the lead in showing this emotion, who will? Such a fine person, and one of the biggest assets of our fraternity. RIP Manoj Sir. Om Shanti 🙏"
Actor Ajay Devgn also took to X and recalled how the legend was not just a "cinematic icon" but also a "personal milestone" in his family’s journey.
"He gave my father, Veeru Devgan, his very first break as an action director in Roti Kapda Aur Makaan. From there, their collaboration continued all the way to Kranti, creating moments that are now part of Indian cinema’s golden history. Manoj ji’s films - Upkar, Purab Aur Paschim, Shor, Kranti, they weren’t just films…they were national emotions. His creative genius, unwavering patriotism, and storytelling depth set a benchmark that very few have matched. As Indian cinema bids farewell to its Bharat Kumar - a storyteller, a patriot, and a legend. I also wish to say thank you for shaping my father’s journey and for inspiring countless storytellers like me. Your legacy, Manoj ji, is eternal," Devgn tweeted.
Manoj Kumar received the Padma Shri in 1992 and was later honoured with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2015. His funeral procession will leave his residence tomorrow, April 5, at 11 AM. His last rites will be performed at the Pavan Hans crematorium.
