Tumbbad creator Rahi Anil Barve unveils Mayasabha, featuring Jaaved Jaaferi as a masked movie producer in a dark and mysterious tale.
Jaaved Jaaferi is unrecognisable as a mysterious masked figure in the motion poster of Mayasabha, the second feature film by Tumbbad writer-director Rahi Anil Barve.
According to reports, the film follows a once-famous movie producer, Parmeshwar Khanna, who resides in a dilapidated theatre with his teenaged son. In the poster, a menacing Jaaferi sports long unkempt locks and a gas mask, while his face is smeared in golden paint.
A characteristically cryptic tagline reads, “FISH ARE THE LAST TO RECOGNIZE WATER
WELCOME TO THE GOLD HUNT!”
Sharing the motion poster on Instagram, Rahi Anil Barve wrote, “A decade ago, we unleashed a madness — an experiment too strange, unspeakable even for those who dare to fathom the abyss. The curse is finally broken. The mysterious world of Parmeshwar Khanna (Jaaved Jaaferi) will finally see the light. Enjoy your gold hunt.”
Barve’s debut feature, Tumbbad, was an atmospheric period horror film lauded for its uniqueness and visual power. Originally released in 2018, the film grew a cult following and is considered a landmark in Indian horror. It had a successful re-release in 2024, earning around 38 crores over its original collections.
Other than Mayasabha, Rahi Anil Barve has also directed Gulkanda Tales, a long-awaited period series with Kunal Kemmu, Pankaj Tripathi, and Patralekha in its cast. Gulkanada Tales is produced by filmmaker duo Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK, who also serve as the creators.
A synopsis posted online reads, “A tale of (a) tiny fictional kingdom in ancient India where strange events occur with roll of comedy and mishaps.”
The Hollywood Reporter India recently learned that Gulkanda Tales has overcome its post-production troubles, with conversations in place for the show to stream on Prime Video.
Jaaved Jaaferi was last seen in Do You Wanna Partner, and will next be seen in De De Pyaar De 2, alongside Ajay Devgn and Rakul Preet Singh. With Mayasabha, he steps into a darker, more experimental role, marking a distinct shift from his recent work in romance and comedy.
