Ryan Coogler is riding high on the wave of success with his latest film Sinners, which made a powerful debut over Easter weekend, earning $48 million and outpacing heavy hitters like Minecraft: The Movie. But for Coogler, the win is more than just numbers — it’s personal.

In an open letter brimming with heartfelt appreciation, the Black Panther director expressed overwhelming gratitude to audiences who showed up at theatres across the world. From those who rearranged their schedules and brought friends along, to viewers who saw the film multiple times or championed it on social media, Coogler acknowledged every ounce of support with sincerity.

“Eternal gratitude. My heart is bursting with it,” he wrote, thanking people who not only bought tickets but also made memories in the lobby afterward, discussing the film and connecting with others.

Sinners, a haunting story about twin brothers confronting the darkness of their past in their hometown, is rooted in Coogler’s own family history and personal experiences. Despite the genre of the film being rooted in horror, the film has a lot of emotional depth — a trait that’s become a signature of his work. Coogler emphasised that the film was created not just as a personal project, but with the audience firmly in mind.

He said, “I want to thank each and every one of you who bought a ticket to see Sinners. Who decided to drive to see the film in different formats. Who bought popcorn and a drink, booked a sitter and carpooled, and stood in the lobby afterward and talked and made a friend. Who changed their work schedules. Who saw the film in groups.”

The director also touched on the importance of the cinematic experience, calling theatres a “necessary pillar of society.” He added, “We don’t get to do what we do if you don’t show up. The global theatrical audience has allowed me to dream, find a career, and build a more sustainable life for me and my family. And the only way that I know how to thank you for that, is by continuing to mine my personal human experience and my relationships for more stories to bring to you in cinematic language. To see your response to the film has invigorated me and many others who believe in this art form.”

Paying homage to the filmmakers who shaped his creative lens, Coogler listed a wide range of cinematic influences — from Spike Lee and Ava DuVernay to Martin Scorsese, George Lucas and David Lynch. It’s clear that Sinners is as much a love letter to cinema itself as it is a tale of redemption and reckoning.
