Amid concerns of growing creative fatigue in the YRF Spy Universe, Aditya Chopra shifts focus to rebooting the 'Dhoom' franchise.
Yash Raj Films’ ambitious crossover Tiger vs Pathaan, which promised a high-octane face-off between Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan, has reportedly been put on hold. According to a report by Peepingmoon, the studio’s head Aditya Chopra is taking a step back to reassess the creative direction of the YRF Spy Universe, which includes hits like Ek Tha Tiger, Pathaan and War.
The concern is that the franchise risks becoming formulaic. “Aditya believes the spy universe films are veering towards repetition and need a revitalised approach to storytelling and presentation,” the report said. While rumours have circulated about the film being shelved altogether, there has been no official statement from the studio.
This pause comes alongside another strategic move: a renewed focus on the long-dormant Dhoom franchise. As per News18, Dhoom 4 is now the top priority for YRF, with Ranbir Kapoor locked in to play the lead. The project is being shaped to suit Kapoor’s screen persona, with Chopra and screenwriter Shridhar Raghavan closely involved in the development process. The report also suggests that Ayan Mukerji is in talks to direct, with production potentially starting by April 2026.
The pivot signals YRF’s effort to diversify its action slate, even as the spy universe continues to expand. War 2, starring Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR and Kiara Advani, is slated for release on 14 August 2025. Roshan will reprise his role as Kabir, while Jr NTR makes his Bollywood debut.
Another spin-off, Alpha — led by Alia Bhatt, Sharvari and Bobby Deol—is due in cinemas on 25 December 2025.
