'If it had been in our control, we would've had our own 'Dhoom' franchise,' joked Vinay Pathak about his 'Special Ops 2' co-star Kay Kay Menon.
Neeraj Pandey quips that Kay Kay Menon and Vinay Pathak, two of India's finest actors who are currently in the filmmaker's Special Ops 2, have rarely shared screen space because, as he puts it, "two swords can't be in one scabbard." But Menon and Pathak, having previously worked together only in the 2011 comedy Bheja Fry 2, tell THR India that they never believed in teaming up for the sake of optics.
"It is a popular question, but we are the wrong people to ask that," Pathak said when asked a fan query about their rare collaborations. "Because we have never submitted to anything popular. As actors, we have never yielded to anything that is trendy or mainstream."
Menon backed Pathak and said it has "never happened", to his knowledge, that the duo was offered films but something didn't work out. "It's all destiny," said Menon, as Pathak explained that collaborating on projects is ultimately a producer's decision, which they're not involved in.
"It's not in our hands anyway. If it were, we'd have created our own franchise – maybe something like our own Dhoom or a Kane and Abel-style series. We've just not worked in that space much," Pathak said.
Menon has more projects that fall in the conventional bracket of a "commercial" outing. His career in the 2000s saw him balance Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi, Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd, Gulaal and Life in a... Metro with more mainstream titles like Drona, Maan Gaye Mughal-e-Azam, or, in the last decade, ABCD: Any Body Can Dance, Singh Is Bliing, and A Flying Jatt.
"I remember doing Singh Is Bliing and telling Prabhudheva that I want to be like him in the film, so I just followed him. It was a joy for me! There is only so much of a difference. In one, you make yourself zero and take on whatever you are playing, and in the other one (commercial films), you triple your ego and play it... that works in a certain kind of cinema," Menon explained.
"For me, this is enjoyable, as long as I find people around me conducive to work. So, I sometimes play T20, One Day, and Test matches. Ultimately, I am a decent cricketer," the actor joked. Currently streaming on JioHotstar, Special Ops 2 also stars Karan Tacker and Saiyami Kher.
