After a long 18 year gap, two icons of Malayalam cinema, Mammootty and Mohanlal, are coming together in the upcoming espionage-thriller Patriot, directed by Mahesh Narayanan. However, the film set served as more than a long-awaited reunion; it highlighted the contrasting acting processes of two actors who have dominated the industry for decades.

Narayanan has previously described Mohanlal as a “spontaneous” performer, while comparing Mammootty’s approach to an architect who constructs a role with precision. Mammootty agreed that Mohanlal is an actor of the moment. In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, the actor shared, “Acting is deliberate. I cannot say how it’s engineered or architected. There is no science for it,” noting that the process is not clinical and every actor has their own methods.

Despite being in the industry for decades, the actor admitted that the process remains high-pressure. He revealed that he still feels the physical tension right before the camera rolls. “The blood pressure is high unless the director says cut, the initial acting is to hide that pressure,” he explained. He dismisses the idea of formally preparing for roles, instead relying on observations, “noticing all their activities, nuances, gesticulations, these will be there recorded in your brain", which helps him prepare.

Mammootty also noted that both Mohanlal and come from normal backgrounds, which informs how they carry themselves. “We are already in rhythm, we have never had the stardom on our shoulders,” he said, sharing that it has helped the process of shooting for Patriot become entirely seamless.

When asked about the longevity of his career, Mammootty attributed it to a drive similar to passion in politics. He dismissed the idea of taking prolonged breaks, suggesting that even physical exhaustion rarely keeps him away from the set. "This is breathing, once you lose your breath, your actor is dead,” he said. “You can take rest for a day, not for a month of a week, that will affect you." For him, the collaboration in Patriot is not a look back in nostalgia, but a continuation of a lifelong passion for acting.

Patriot’s ensemble cast also features Fahadh Fasil, Kunchacko Boban, Nayanthara, Darshana and Revathi. The film is slated for a theatrical release on May 1, 2026.
