‘Metro… In Dino’ Nears ₹50 Crore Mark as Word-of-Mouth Lifts Box Office; ‘Maalik’ Steady in Opening Weekend

Anurag Basu’s ensemble drama gains ground in urban centres in its second week, while Pulkit’s gritty gangster film ‘Maalik’ holds firm amid new releases.

Anurag Basu’s multi-starrer Metro… In Dino continued its upward trend at the domestic box office over its second weekend, bolstered by strong word-of-mouth and a noticeable uptick in urban audience turnout. The film, which follows the interlinked lives of four couples in contemporary India, brought in ₹4.22 crore on its second Sunday, July 13, according to data from industry tracker Sacnilk. A day prior, it recorded a striking 95.74% jump in earnings, collecting ₹4.6 crore on Saturday.

By the end of its second weekend, Metro… In Dino had amassed ₹45.65 crore globally, comprising ₹33.8 crore in India net and ₹5.4 crore from overseas markets. The film, produced by T-Series and directed by Basu, features a star-studded cast including Aditya Roy Kapur, Sara Ali Khan, Konkona Sen Sharma, Neena Gupta, Pankaj Tripathi, Fatima Sana Shaikh, and Ali Fazal.

Meanwhile, Maalik, directed by Pulkit and starring Rajkummar Rao, put up a respectable showing in its opening weekend despite facing competition from Vikrant Massey starrer Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan, a romantic drama that also marked Shanaya Kapoor’s Bollywood debut. Between the clashing releases, Rao's Maalik came out ahead of the romantic film which only managed to earn ₹1.3 crore over its opening weekend.

As per Sacnilk, Maalik, a gangster drama, earned ₹5.25 crore on Sunday, bringing its three-day total to ₹14.25 crore during its first weekend in theatres. The film’s opening day figure stood at ₹3.75 crore. It recorded an average Hindi occupancy of 20.77% on Sunday, with the highest footfall during the evening shows at 29.79%. Morning occupancy remained the lowest at 8.05%.
