Superstar Rajinikanth's Jailer arrived in theatres on August 10, 2023, and quickly became the highest-grossing Tamil film of the year, crossing ₹600 crore in worldwide earnings.
Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, the Tamil action drama introduced viewers to 'Tiger' Muthuvel Pandian, a retired jailer pulled out of his quiet, family life and back into the grim violence of the underworld by his son's kidnapping and apparent murder. The film ended with one of Kollywood's most-discussed climactic moments: a father killing his own son.
Three years later, the Superstar is back as Muthuvel, with Jailer 2 arriving in theatres on October 15. Picking up in the aftermath of the events of the first film, the sequel reunites director Nelson Dilipkumar, composer Anirudh Ravichander and several returning cast members, while introducing a new ensemble that includes SJ Suryah, Vidya Balan, Vijay Sethupathi and more.
Here is everything you need to know before walking into Jailer 2.
Rajinikanth plays 'Tiger' Muthuvel Pandian, a retired jailer who spent decades in the prison system before stepping away to retreat into quiet family life. In Jailer, he is first introduced as a quiet, elderly man living in a small town with his family — a grandfather figure who cooks, tends to his household and appears to have left his past as a jailer behind entirely.
That past, however, catches up with him when he finds out his son, ACP Arjun, is killed while pursuing a drug lord named Varman.
The first film follows a largely methodical revenge narrative in which Muthuvel dismantles Varman's criminal network and eventually kills the antagonist. But it divulges from the template to give us a massive but well-earned twist. When Muthuvel finds out that his son is living and breathing, but as a corrupt cop who works with Varman for a cut, he kills him in an act of moral righteousness.
While Jailer ends with Varman dead, his warning that the criminal network he led remains intact sets the stage for the sequel.
The trailer of Jailer 2 reveals that Muthuvel did not go into hiding, after all. Instead, he has taken on the identity of a quiet, unassuming car driver — another ordinary life, another mask.
The sequel's trailer picks up with a new threat already in motion: Suraj Venjaramoodu's character Dileep, who appears as one of the film's primary antagonists, is seen interrogating someone about the man they are looking for, suggesting Muthuvel is being hunted. It is also hinted that SJ Suryah's Bodhi Kalpak will play one of the film's main villains.
Is Muthuvel pulled back into violence by circumstance or by choice? This looks to be what the sequel sets out to answer.
Rajinikanth returns as 'Tiger' Muthuvel Pandian, along with Ramya Krishnan, who plays Vijaya Pandian, Muthuvel's wife. Mirnaa also returns as Swetha Pandian, Muthuvel's daughter-in-law and his late son, Arjun's wife, and Rithvik stars as Rithvik "Rithu" Pandian, Muthuvel's grandson.
Yogi Babu also returns as Vimal, the local taxi driver.
Meanwhile, Jailer's most prominent and discussed cameo stars are back for the sequel. Mohanlal is back as Matthew, prominent underworld figure and Muthuvel's trusted ally from his days as a jailer.
Shiva Rajkumar also returns as Narasimha, Muthuvel's close companion, whose men kill Muthuvel's son at his command in the climax of the first film.
Jackie Shroff also reprises his role as Kamdev, a gangster who was initially hired to kill Muthuvel and his family. It is later revealed that he was once imprisoned in Tihar Jail, where Muthuvel, the then jailer, helped reform Kamdev's life. Kamdev becomes one of Muthuvel's close allies in Jailer.
The film's new additions make an appearance in the sequel's trailer, with SJ Suryah's recently introduced Bodhi Kalpak speaking directly to the camera, saying, "Can only the Jailer set up snipers? Why wouldn't I?"
Vidya Balan's Kantha appears in the trailer, blowing cigarette smoke on Muthuvel's face as she offers him a drink of tea or coffee. As Muthuvel rejects the offer, Kantha remarks with a smirk, "You can only choose between tea or coffee. You can't choose whether you're willing to drink it or not."
In the trailer, actor Apeksha Porwal is seen holding a gun and performing several stunt sequences. Her character was classified a mystery addition by fans, until Porwal addressed the speculation on social media, writing, "Since it's everywhere anyway.. Did you catch your girl in the trailer of Jailer 2 yet?"
Mithun Chakraborty joins the sequel, entering in a wheelchair, in a gruff look with thin hair slicked back.
Nora Fatehi, who has recently been announced as part of the sequel in a special dance number Bindaas, was not seen in the trailer. Hrithik Roshan and Vijay Sethupathi are also reported to have cameos in the sequel.
At the Jailer 2 Super Show recently telecast on Sun NXT, Rajinikanth spoke about why he broke his sequel rule for Jailer 2. "I usually don’t prefer sequels. I feel like whatever is in Part 1, they’ll add salt and spices to it. I was approached for Baasha 2 and Petta 2, but I did not agree to do them."
He elaborated on how the first film laid the groundwork for a sequel. "Towards the end of the film, when I’m about to kill him, Varman says that he has a huge network who won’t spare me. Also, at the end of Jailer, there are three containers worth ₹1000 crore. I felt it had potential for a sequel."
Nelson Dilipkumar returns to helm the sequel, which is produced by Kalanithi Maran under the Sun Pictures banner. The music is by Anirudh Ravichander, cinematography by Vijay Kartik Kannan and editing by R. Nirmal — the same technical team as the original. Production for the sequel began in 2025 and wrapped in April 2026.
Varman is gone but the network he operated isn't going anywhere. Muthuvel is drawn back into the underworld with newer, bigger stakes. The story continues on October 15, as Jailer 2 opens in theatres worldwide.
