Sivakarthikeyan plays a college student drawn into the movement, with the narrative unfolding against a backdrop of student activism and ideological conflict.

Reports suggest that the CBFC objected to several sequences depicting the anti-Hindi protests, recommending their removal or modification. Kongara subsequently approached the board’s revising committee in Mumbai, arguing that the suggested cuts would substantially alter the film’s narrative and dilute its historical context. As of now, neither the director nor the production team has issued an official statement on the matter.

Despite the impasse, the film is expected to receive certification shortly, though the final version may differ from the one originally submitted.

The reason for the delay was almost entirely based on how the film failed to obtain censorship certification, even when the film had less than 40 hours to release. In India, a film cannot be exhibited in theatres without first posting a copy of the film’s censor certificate before each screening. 

A case that was filed by the production house with the Madras High Court, contesting the delay in obtaining the censorship certificate, was being heard until the evening of the 7th of January. When the hearing ended, the Judge stated that the judgment would be reserved for a later day. The court is expected to pronounce its decision on January 9, the day the mega film was gearing up for a wide-scale global release, thereby denting its smooth and timely release. 

As soon as the news was out, the film began to be pulled down from online ticket booking applications. On Thursday, all shows allotted for 

will be given to other films, especially Sivakarthikeyan’s 

On Monday, the Judge, upon hearing a petition, had asked the additional solicitor general representing the CBFC (Central Board for Film Certification) to submit all the records of the movie, including any complaints filed against it, on Wednesday.

According to several news outlets, KVN Productions’ decision not to announce a new release date may be linked to the fact that there is still room for the CBFC to appeal the decision made by the High Court. A Division bench with two judges may be called to hear the case and it may even be appealed at the Supreme Court, further delaying the film’s release.

During the hearing on Wednesday, it was brought to the court’s notice that the production house had applied for a censor certificate as early as December 18, after the film completed production on December 15. According to a report in 

, the CBFC had recommended a U/A 16+ certificate subject to certain excisions and modifications. These cuts were made, and the newer version was submitted on December 24. But there was no response from the board for nearly 10 days, despite many reminders, the report stated.

The same report added that the petitioner was surprised when the board had sent a notice stating that the film needed to be referred to a revising committee as late as January 5, just days before release. This delay was attributed to how the film had received a complaint due to its content that could potentially hurt religious sentiments and the portrayal of armed forces in certain scenes.

During the film’s audio launch, which took place last week in Malaysia, Vijay had foreseen a possible delay in the film’s release. Addressing the film’s primary producer, Vijay had asked if, during the initial stage of the film’s discussions, the former was sure about associating with the superstar. He had said, “I asked him (producer Venkat K. Narayana) if he was sure to make a film with me. My films have to deal with obstacles at every stage, even during normal circumstances. But now that I’ve decided to take a different path after this (his political entry), there are sure to be even bigger challenges. But when I asked him this, he was the one who smiled and spread all his positivity into this project.”

When we first thought of an October release, we decided to push it only because that was when

As he shared the clip of the older version of the song, director Vikraman urged fans of both stars to not compare both versions as they are great performers in their own right.  

Sharing the song, Vikraman wrote, “The song ‘Ennai Thaalattum’ from the film Unnai Ninaithu was recently sung by students in Sri Lanka and went viral on social media. I had originally filmed this song featuring Thalapathy Vijay, and those memories came rushing back. In that moment, I happened to find an old video cassette related to this song. The video has quality issues, but I am sharing it here for your viewing.” 

Apart from Laila and Suriya, the final version of the film also starred Sneha, Ramesh Khanna, Charle, R.Sundarajjan and Ramji. The film’s music was by Sirpy. It was later remade into Telugu by Vikraman as 

, which went on to become a television blockbuster when it was remade later in Hindi with Amitabh Bachchan. 

, Vikraman, the writer and director of the Tamil version, said he believes the film (

) is made up of core values and emotions that will not age. “These appeal to audiences from all parts of the country, and if you watch the five versions (Tamil, Hindi, Kannada, Telugu and Bengali), you’ll notice how little each new iteration deviates from the original,” he said.

In what appears to be another push to make 

 a truly global release, the SS Rajamouli film, starring Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Prithviraj Sukumaran, got a teaser launch in Paris recently. The teaser was launched 

 Late last month saw a massive launch of the film’s title, which also featured a short clip introducing viewers to the timeless world of the film. This event took place in Hyderabad. The Paris screening further amps up expectations of the film. 

 had become a global phenomenon during the pandemic, with the film going on to attract a new audience when it dropped on Netflix. This further led to a set of special screenings of the film internationally, including in the United States and in Japan. 

, which was released on a grand scale in Hyderabad last year, features fantastical glimpses of various places and spaces, such as Antarctica, Varanasi, and Kenya, across time periods, including 512 CE, 2027 CE and the Threthayuga, hinting at a possible time travel drama. The teaser ends with Mahesh Babu charging ahead on a ferocious bull, amidst the background of the pilgrimage city of Varanasi. The clip sees the Telugu superstar clad in a blood-soaked shirt with a signature Nandi pendant (which we saw in earlier posters) draped around his neck. One also can't miss the trishool he's holding in his hand, as the camera pans to the front to give us a full view of the frame.

The looks of Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran were released in December as part of the film's promotions. Chopra is Mandakini in the poster, draped in a bright yellow saree, standing precariously on the edge of a cliff while firing a gun—the visual subverts the typical portrayal of commercial film heroines, blending classic style with high-octane action. Sukumaran plays Kumbha, the ferocious antagonist. 

SS Rajamouli’s 'Varanasi' Teaser Screened In Paris 

Two days to go for the release of Vijay’s final film, 

, directed by H Vinoth, and the film’s censorship certificate has still not been issued. According to a report in 

, the Madras High Court will take a call on actor Vijay’s movie release today. The Judge, upon hearing a petition, has asked the additional solicitor general representing the CBFC (Central Board for Film Certification) to submit all the records of the movie, including any complaints filed against it, today, Wednesday, two days before the film’s planned release. 

Whether the film will be released on the scheduled date or if it will be pushed will be based on the Court’s decision today. The film's producers had earlier approached the court, citing a delay in the issuance of the Censorship certificate, the same report added. 

, the Sivakarthikeyan film releasing on January 10th, also faced similar issues as it attempted to obtain the Censorship certificate. The film is said to have been granted a UA certificate yesterday after the delay. 

’s trailer has amassed over 40 million views so far, and it includes several statements suggesting his entry into full-fledged politics. It even ends with a line, “I am coming,” hinting at his political entry and how it will change things in his home state of Tamil Nadu. Jana Nayagan is being released a day before Parasakthi, which also comes with its share of politics. It is set in the 50’s and 60’s and has themes that relate to Hindi imposition.

Directed by H Vinoth and produced by KVN Productions in its first Tamil outing, 

 features Vijay alongside Pooja Hegde and Bobby Deol, with Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Narain and Priyamani in supporting roles. The film was initially announced in September 2024 under the working title 

, denoting Vijay’s 69th outing as a lead actor, with the final title revealed earlier this year. 

Filming began in Chennai in October 2024, followed by schedules in Payanoor and subsequent shoots back in the city, before wrapping in August 2025. The technical team includes composer Anirudh Ravichander, cinematographer Sathyan Sooryan and editor Pradeep E Ragav. The film is slated for a Pongal release on 9 January 2026.
